`Ancient Philosophy' is the first of four volumes in Anthony Kenny's `A New History of Western Philosophy' recently published by Oxford University Press.

For those unfamiliar with the author, Kenny is a leading contemporary scholar that has previously written noteworthy texts on Aquinas, Descartes, and Wittgenstein amongst others/5(17).

While I haven’t finished this book as of yet, I wanted to go ahead and give a big thumbs up to the material. Peter Adamson does a marvelous job of making both his books and his wonderful podcast series, The History of Philosophy without Any Gaps, engaging for the active student and just entertaining enough to add a punch of fun for the general reader.5/5(4).

In this series of episodes, Peter examines the history of philosophy in the Latin Christian world, from the Carolingian period (the time of Charlemagne and his successors) down to The episodes are divided into three sections: Early Medieval 13th Century 14th Century.

Peter Adamson presents a lively introduction to six hundred years of European philosophy, from the beginning of the ninth century to the end of the fourteenth century.

The medieval period is one of the richest in the history of philosophy, yet one of the least widely known/5(6). Having devoted extensive attention to the development of philosophy among the ancient Greeks, we’ll now cover more than a millenium of Western thought more briefly.

The very name “medieval” (literally, “the in-between time”) philosophy suggests the tendency of modern thinkers to skip rather directly from Aristotle to the Renaissance. Frederick C. Copleston is a master historian. His nine-volume A History of Philosophy is remarkable in its breadth, depth and analyticity, especially the volume on ancient Greek philosophy.

However, Copleston's work A History of Medieval Philosophy, while being a good intro work is nevertheless very dry and difficult to read/5(4). ‎This course will concentrate on major figures and persistent themes in ancient and medieval philosophy. A balance will be sought between scope and depth, the latter ensured by a close reading of selected texts from Plato, Aristotle, Lucretius, Marcus Aurelius, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas.

For all /5(24). PHI Medieval Philosophy Medieval philosophy centered on the synthesis of Catholic faith with ancient philosophy, the rise of university culture, and the widespread systematic exploration of philosophy.

In this course, students will be introduced to the major figures and ideas of medieval philosophy. This course will include discussions of the emergence of scholasticism, Saint Thomas.

Anthony Kenny tells the story of philosophy from ancient Greece through the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment into the modern world.

He introduces us to the great thinkers and their ideas, starting with Plato, Aristotle, and the other founders of Western thought/5().

This history is designed to present a dynamic approach to the study of ancient and medieval philosophy. It correlates ancient, medieval, and modern ideas and shows the perennial significance of the contributions of ancient thinkers. Routledge History of Philosophy 1st Edition. G.H.R. Parkinson, S.G. Shanker Febru Since the publication of the first volume inthe Routledge History of Western Philosophy has established itself as the most comprehensive chronological survey of the history of western philosophy available.

The structure of the book was initially confusing but the patterned layout of the text makes a lot of sense when you're reading this as an introduction to the subject, because people who do philosophy don't tend to do all philosophy; the text is the history of philosophy but has in mind people with no interest in the history of philosophy who /5.A History of Medieval Philosophy is an invaluable general introduction that also includes longer treatments of such leading thinkers as Aquinas, Scotus, and Ockham.
